AQA Foundation Level GCSE Mathematics

Overview

This is an intensive one-year course for adults aged 19 or over, commencing in September 2023. We offer a GCSE Maths course which will motivate and inspire our learners and enable them to develop the skills they need to gain up to a grade 5 which is the level which most employers and academic institutions require. Courses are held across Surrey at our centres in Guildford, Woking, Camberley, Sunbury, and Molesey or you can choose to attend an online class. You can study in the daytime or in the evening. All our classes last 3 hours and run once a week.

Entry requirements

This course is for adult learners aged 19 or over on the 31st of August 2023 who do not have a grade A* to C or grade 9 to 4 GCSE in maths. All applicants will be required to complete a written and an online initial assessment. If the result of the initial assessment determines that you are not yet at the level needed for this course, a tutor might recommend that you attend a Stepping Stones to Functional Skills maths class at Entry Level 3 or Level 1. Please note that these courses are unlikely to be suitable for English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) learners without a Level 2 ESOL qualification.

Fees

There are no tuition, registration, or examination fees to pay for this course if:

  • You are UK national and have lived in the UK continuously for three years.
  • You are a UK national and have lived in either the European Economic Area (EEA) only, or EEA and UK only for at least the last three years.
  • You are an EEA national with pre-settled or settled status (under the EU settlement scheme) and have lived continuously in the EEA, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least three years.
  • You are a non-UK national with permission granted by the UK government to live in the UK continuously for at least three years.

Attendance

You will be required to attend a minimum of 90% of your classes. Should your attendance fall below this, your place on the course may be at risk.

Course content

Our programme has been specifically designed to suit learners who are aged 19+. This course is challenging and requires perseverance and dedication. The course content covers number, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics, and probability at foundation level only and is unlikely to be suitable for learners who do not achieve a minimum of Level 1 in their initial assessment or already have a grade D or grade 3 GCSE or a Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills qualification. You must sit the final exam with Surrey Adult Learning, not with another provider. The exam dates are fixed nationally and cannot be changed.

Delivery method

The courses are taught in English by a tutor who is a subject specialist at one of our centres or online. Learners are reminded that this is an academic course, and you must allow time for private study at home of at least 3 hours per week In addition to this we recommend that learners studying GCSE Maths develop learning skills and understanding outside the classroom through use of the Internet, My Maths, Moodle and Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) test.

Progression

The GCSE Maths qualification will help you to improve your career prospects. It will also maximise the opportunity for successful candidates to gain entry to a higher-level course, or an apprenticeship programme in the future.

Additional information

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. Surrey Adult Learning values and supports equality and diversity by always promoting fairness and respect.
