Manual Bookkeeping - Stage 1

Course intent

You will learn the basics of manual bookkeeping rather than computerised methods. The course will take you through all the steps required to produce a Trial Balance. Bookkeeping involves tracking a business's financial transactions and events by recording all operations.

How to Apply

There are three ways to apply on this course. You can:

  • visit one of our centres.

We'll evaluate your skills and provide a course offer, which you must accept to secure your place.

What will we cover?

• Understanding the various documents used in bookkeeping e.g. invoices, statements.

  • Calculation of trade and cash discounts
  • Recording and checking invoices and transferring to the daybooks and ledgers.
  • Recording payments and receipts into a Cashbook and the double entry system
  • Recording petty cash payments and the imprest system.
  • Bank Reconciliation statements.
  • Balancing accounts and producing a Trial Balance.
  • Introduction to VAT
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

The course is suitable for beginners. You must have basic literacy and numeracy skills.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring pens, pencils, eraser, ruler notepad/paper and calculator (basic).

Textbook – to be advised if required.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto another Surrey Adult learning course, such as:

  • Manual Bookkeeping – Stage 2
  • Business Management – Run Your Own Business
  • Spreadsheets – Excel

Or your tutor will advise you where to look, if you wish to do an accredited course.
