Upholstery - A Day in the Workshop - All Abilities [SSK]

Course intent

You will learn some of the basic techniques of upholstery so that you can upholster a small item of furniture (such as a footstool or a small chair). You will learn about the tools used and be able to use them safely.

You will enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

• Assessment of items of furniture in order to determine the appropriate type of re-upholstery.

  • Identifying appropriate filling/stuffing/webbing and its use.
  • Identifying/evaluating/measuring suitable fabric/trimmings/buttons and their use.
  • Colour and design principles
  • Upholstering an item of furniture using traditional or modern methods
  • Safeguarding & British values

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    All Abilities.

Beginners need to bring a small item of furniture such as a footstool. If you are a more experienced learner, you will be able to continue with your work, including stripping old upholstery.

  • If your piece of furniture has materials that have been made fire retardant, these will contain persistent organic pollutants, POPs. Due to new Health & Safety law, if you remove this material from the furniture, you will need to take the material away yourself and dispose of it off the premises.

For adults aged 18 years or older
