Cookery for Men

Course intent

Would you like to gain confidence in the kitchen? Make your own delicious meals and impress your family and friends with your cuisine? Then this course is for you!

The intent of this course is for you to learn a range of basic cooking and kitchen safety skills, enabling you to produce tasty and healthy dishes from scratch, and to use and adapt recipes with confidence.

What will we cover?

This course will develop your confidence in a variety of cooking skills, so that you can recognise ingredients that work together and to master the use of kitchen equipment, including knife handling. You will also learn how to carry out best hygienic practices and understand food safety hazards that may occur in a kitchen.

The course is largely learner-led, with the overall direction of the course being decided within the class, and the dishes taught being chosen with the learners’ wishes and tastes in mind.

Our courses build on past learning, week by week, to develop new abilities. You will find you make the most progress if you attend every lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is suitable for mixed abilities, but not for complete beginners. Less experienced or less confident cooks may be encouraged to limit the number of dishes they prepare. If you are new to cooking, please enquire about our Cookery - Essential Skills - Stage 1 (HPT) courses which may suit your needs better.

This course is suitable for vegetarians and those with any specific dietary requirements. The tutor will always be able to suggest alternative ingredients.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

The course fees do NOT include the cost of ingredients, and you are responsible for supplying your own ingredients for the lessons. You will receive an email before the start of the course, informing you of the ingredients and equipment you will need for your first lesson. Your tutor should be able to suggest alternatives for both ingredients and equipment, so discuss any concerns with them.

Please ensure you have an apron and tea-towels available, a pen and reading glasses (if you use them), so that you can read and make notes on the recipes. It is important to wear clothes and footwear suitable for a busy, hot kitchen.

What can I do when I finish the course?

At the end of the term, you may wish to re-enrol on the next Cookery For Men course, and at the end of the academic year, in discussion with your tutor, you may wish to move to another of our regular Cookery courses. We have a range of general and more specialist cookery and baking courses available, throughout the year.

The tutor will also be able to advise you on external courses, workshops and other opportunities to develop your understanding, knowledge and skills.
