Upholstery - 3-Day Workshop [SSK]

Course intent

This is an opportunity for new learners to be introduced to the basic techniques of Upholstery.

It could also be for more experienced learners who wish to continue their work.

Please note : This is a workshop that takes place over 3 consecutive days.

What will we cover?

Beginners will be able to re-upholster a small item of furniture such as a footstool or dining chair and name and identify tools to be used and demonstrate their safe use.

You will learn:

  • How to re-upholster your item of furniture using traditional or modern methods, including stripping old upholstery, evaluating the condition of the frame and recognise necessary repairs.
  • To identify appropriate filling/stuffing/webbing and how they will be used.
  • To identify/evaluate/measure suitable fabric/trimmings/buttons and how they will be used.
  • To identify colour and design principles.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All abilities. No specific skills or prior knowledge required but learners will have to transport their individual projects to the class to each session.

If your piece of furniture has materials that have been made fire retardant, these will contain persistent organic pollutants, POPs. Due to new Health & Safety law, if you remove this material from the furniture, you will need to take the material away yourself and dispose of it off the premises.

Please email the tutor before the course if you have any questions regarding your project.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Items of furniture to be re-upholstered.

  • Notebook and pen.
  • Any Upholstery tools you may have.
  • Sensible closed toe shoes.

Extra costs include reupholstery materials to complete your project - advice will be given for additional items needed. Most basic materials are available for purchase at the centre apart from foam and springs. Also, additional costs for your fabric, braid etc.

You may also wish to take photos of your progress with the chair with either your camera or phone.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners will have the opportunity for continuous personal development within the course, to progress onto other Surrey Adult Learning courses to enhance learning, or in some cases progress onto accredited courses offered by other providers.

The course levels are:

Introduction courses will give you a taste of what a subject or course is like before you progress to a longer course.

Workshops are usually short one-off or extension courses focusing on a particular area and are normally one day or less.

Beginners courses are suitable for those with no previous experience or as a “refresher”. They may be described as such throughout the year as those advertised in the autumn term generally continue for the spring and sometimes the summer too.

Improvers courses are for those with some previous experience who are starting to work towards more independent learning.

Advanced courses are for those who have substantial previous experience, are capable of working quite independently, and who wish to develop with the support and guidance of a tutor.

Mixed Ability courses are suitable for those with any level of previous experience.
