Sewing – Making Simple, Beautiful & Useful Things for Travelling/Gifts Workshop [SSK]

Course intent

Sew some personalised, simple travel accessories or gift items - perhaps someone is flying the nest or going on a journey. Choose one project or more depending on your level, from a simple zip up wallet or mobile phone case to draw-string laundry or travel bags. Absolute beginners will learn how to make a Make-up Brush/Pencil/ Brush/ Knitting Needle/Cutlery roll, gaining useful sewing skills to apply to many future projects. Enjoy a productive day giving you the chance to enjoy the well-being benefits of sewing in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

Projects you could choose include:

  • Make-up Brush/Pencil/Knitting Needle/Cutlery roll (suitable for absolute beginners)
  • Simple Travel Wallet
  • Eye Mask
  • Beach Bag
  • Drawstring Shoe/Laundry Bag
  • Hair Scrunchies
  • A Cloth Basket
  • A Pouch or Zip-up Bag
  • follow simple sewing instructions
  • pin and cut out easy shapes in fabric
  • thread a sewing machine
  • sew a straight line and pivot
  • do a simple hem
  • using bias binding

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutor guidance, group discussions and critiques.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Absolute Beginners, Beginners or Improvers. Many of the projects are based on rectangles and require the ability to follow simple written instructions.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring for each project and where to source fabrics.

Everyone will need:

  • basic sewing kit: dressmaking scissors and embroidery scissors/snips, tape measure, ruler, dressmaking pins, hand sewing needles
  • seam ripper
  • chalk pencil/wash out marker pen
  • small note pad and pen
  • reading glasses if you wear them
  • magnifying glass to help you thread the needle

Sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the workshop or you can bring your own machine if it is in good working order and you know how to use it.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further longer sewing and dressmaking courses or try other workshops such as Sewing - Sew a Super Summer Sun Hat - Beginners on 22nd June. Or why not try our summer skills workshops in July which offer some inspiring, simple sewing projects. Ask your tutor for other courses she will be teaching.
