Sculpture- Create an Animal Head in Clay Workshop - All Abilities [SSK]

Course intent

During this one-day workshop, you will learn how to create a 25cm tall sculpture of an animal head made out of clay. You will need to arrange to collect your sculpture from the Guildford centre in September if you are having it fired to allow time for your work to dry and be fired over the summer break. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

You will be modelling an animal head (such as a horse or dog) in clay

  • working from a source image
  • proportion
  • structure
  • composition
  • creating a textured surface
  • hollowing out your sculpture
  • finish and preparation of your sculpture in readiness for firing at a later date.

Your tutor will advise you when it will be ready for collection. The size of the sculpture will not exceed 25cm in height.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Beginners in sculpture, or people with a little experience of model making, pottery, cake decoration or other 3-d disciplines. This course is also suitable if you have completed other sculpture courses and want to learn how to model in clay.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• If you want to sculpt an animal you know, then please bring in good, clear pictures showing your animal’s head from every angle. This could be on a tablet or printed out A4 size.

  • a sketchbook/ notebook and pencil or pen and,
  • if you have them, basic tools for clay modelling, if not tools are available at the centre.
  • Please wear clothes for messy work, sensible closed-toe shoes, and bring an apron. Please also bring a packed lunch and drink if needed.

Most consumable materials such as clay are included in the course fee. Sculptures that require firing are limited to a height/size restriction of 25cm in height. Your tutor will bring in photos for you to work from if you don’t provide your own.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto our longer Sculpture - All Abilities courses on a Wednesday morning or afternoon (Guildford) or evening (Woking) with this tutor, or try Sculpture With a Life Model on a Thursday day or Tuesday evening course in Guildford.
