Calligraphy – French Ronde - Beginners & Improvers [SSK]

Course intent

During the workshop you will explore the French Ronde writing style. This fascinating style is a rounded and open style of calligraphy that has its origins in the late 16th century. You will learn to form and use its tall tops and tails and curled, ornate capitals. You’ll practise and then produce a short quote and combine it with some of the decorative capitals.

What will we cover?

• Ruling up writing lines

• Assembling the nib and reservoir
• Observation skills to establish how the letters are formed
• Writing the alphabet and then words and sentences.
• Experiment with the capitals to create some patterns that can be used with our writing
• Using colour to enhance our writing

Teaching will be through demonstrations, discussion one to one tuition and possibly group work.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Pens, ink, paint and some good paper will be supplied.

• Old clothes
• Reading glasses if you use them
• A sketchbook or notepad and biro
• Two pencils – and HB and a harder 2H for example
• A ruler, rubber and pencil sharpener
• An A3 sketch or layout pad

If you have any calligraphy materials, please bring them with you.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can progress onto other Arts & Crafts courses with SAL.
