Pilates - Improvers

Course intent

Pilates is a great way to build up your core strength and improve mobility to keep you healthy and active. It focuses on alignment, breathwork and core stability. All of which makes it a fantastic stress-buster! If you’ve practised Pilates for one or two years and want to progress to a wider range of exercises, that provide more of a challenge, this is the course for you.

What will we cover?

The intent of this course is to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness, wellbeing but also improve posture, balance and coordination.

Posture, strength and flexibility will be improved through a series of (mainly) floor-based exercises, introduced slowly over a period of weeks and then practised and perfected over the course. Variations on the basic exercises will allow you to practise at a level suitable to your abilities and experience.

You will strengthen and tone the body, particularly the core muscles. You will increase your stamina and develop spinal stability for exercising safely. You will also learn correct breathing techniques.

Our courses build on past learning, week by week, to develop new skills and abilities. You will find you make the most progress if you attend every lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is suitable for those who have a good understanding of the basic principles of Pilates and are familiar with, and can safely perform, a range of beginners' exercises. Ideally you will have completed 3 to 6 terms on Beginners’ courses.

You will be asked to complete a Pre-Exercise Check List at the start of the course so that the tutor knows your current health needs and abilities.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You should wear comfortable clothing which allows a full range of movement, e.g. raising the arms above the head and bending over/crouching down. Have extra layers and/or a blanket available for relaxation.

You will need a non-slip Yoga mat (or a camping mat for the first lesson and the tutor will give advice). If your Yoga mat is new, please unroll it before the first lesson.

You will also need a block. If you don’t have one, a firm cushion, or thick book would be an acceptable alternative.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Some tutors use a stretch band or a ball for some exercises. This is not essential but will aid you in your workout. The tutor can advise on buying blocks, bands and balls, or provide alternative exercise variations if you do not have them.

You will also need drinking water, especially in warm weather.
