Pilates - Experienced

Course intent

Pilates is a great way to build up your core strength and improve flexibility to keep you healthy and active. If you have been practising Pilates for a while, it may be time to take it up a notch, and challenge yourself further.

What will we cover?

The intent of the course is to challenge and increase core stability, coordination, body awareness and flexibility by mastering exercises learnt as an improver and progressing to more advanced exercises of increased complexity.

Posture, strength and flexibility will be improved through a series of (mainly) floor-based exercises, based on past learning. More complex variations on known exercises, and new exercises will be introduced over a period of weeks and then practised and perfected over the course. Stamina will also be developed through more flowing and faster paced lessons.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for those with a minimum of three years’ experience of practising Pilates and who are able, comfortably and safely, to perform a range of improvers’ level Pilates exercises.

You will be asked to complete a Pre-Exercise Check List at the start of the course so that the tutor knows your current health needs and abilities.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You should wear comfortable clothing which allows a full range of movement, e.g. raising the arms above the head and bending over/crouching down. Have extra layers and/or a blanket available for relaxation.

You will need a non-slip Yoga mat (or a camping mat for the first lesson and the tutor will give advice). If your Yoga mat is new, please unroll it before the first lesson.

You will also need a block. If you don’t have one, a firm cushion, or thick book would be an acceptable alternative.

Some tutors use a stretch band or a ball for some exercises. This is not essential but will aid you in your workout. The tutor can advise on buying blocks, bands and balls, or provide alternative exercise variations if you do not have them.

You will also need drinking water.

What can I do when I finish the course?

At the end of the academic year, in discussion with your tutor, you can decide what the best progression for you might be.

The tutor will also be able to advise you on external courses, workshops and other opportunities to develop your understanding, knowledge and skills.
