Pottery - A Day in the Workshop [SSK]

Course intent

Spend the day in the fully equipped pottery studio and enjoy working with clay. You will learn some basic hand building skills and you will also get an opportunity to try throwing a pot on a wheel.

What will we cover?

• Useful hand building techniques

  • Decorating techniques
  • Making your own pots in the workshop
  • Throwing on a potters’ wheel

Pots will be fired and glazed for you and will be available for collection at a later date.

We are only able to fire work that has been produced in the class using materials provided by SAL.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Beginners are welcome and if you have attended a workshop before you can work on more complex projects.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Sensible closed-toe shoes

  • Apron and suitable clothes for a pottery studio
  • Notebook and pen
  • Long hair must be tied back for certain processes
  • Nails should be clipped as long nails damage your work
  • Avoid wearing hand and wrist jewellery to prevent loss or damage
  • The importance of a clean and tidy studio

Basic materials/technician costs are included. However, learners who choose to work on large projects may be asked to pay additional costs for clay and firing depending on the size. As a guide, learners are asked to work on pieces no higher than15 inches (38cms) and no wider than 12 inches (35cms).

What can I do when I finish the course?

There are longer day and evening courses with Surrey Adult Learning and one day pottery workshops on different topics.
