Creative Writing Workshop - Flash Fiction

Course intent

Flash Fiction is one of the fastest growing forms of prose writing with many writers and readers enjoying the demands of ‘short, short fiction’. This course will help you understand the ingredients of a successful piece of Flash Fiction.

If short stories are the most difficult form of prose writing, how do you approach writing a Flash piece in under 500 words? The challenges posed by this constraint are sometimes frustrating but the results are very satisfying.

What will we cover?

• We will explore what makes good Flash Fiction and techniques for writing with the brevity and precision that the word count demands.

  • The skills learned in writing within a word limit are valuable; editing to express ideas concisely and building vocabulary are useful in any form of writing. Mastering these skills with help to build your confidence in your writing.
