Oil & Acrylic Painting - All Abilities

Course intent

You will learn the knowledge and skills needed to develop and expand your existing range of techniques or if starting as a beginner to begin making confident paintings. According to your level, you will develop painting skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the range of methods and processes. What will we cover?

Throughout the course you will learn:

  • Oil Painting techniques
  • Acrylic Painting techniques
  • The correct use of materials and tools
  • the use of a sketchbook,
  • the use of photographs and found images in developing an image,
  • Painting from direct observation
  • Colour
  • Tonal values
  • Composition
  • The work of other artists and their techniques and style
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

  • Low odour thinner for oils such as ‘Zest-it’ or ‘Sansodor’

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further painting, life drawing, drawing, sculpture or illustration classes or if you wish to put a portfolio together for entrance to an art college then this is a distinct advantage. Meet new people and make friends then visit galleries together. You may find it helpful to enrol on art history lectures.
