Course intent

Dress your home with luxury and style whilst controlling your budget. Learn how to make your own curtains, blinds and soft-furnishings, gaining great practical skills and exploring your creativity. You’ll develop confidence to take on home decorating projects and achieve the home of your dreams.

Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

Depending on your personal project needs, you will learn how to

  • Decide the starting point for making soft furnishings for your home.
  • Measure windows or/and doors for curtain.
  • Make roman blinds
  • Make pencil pleat, eyelet or pinch pleat curtains
  • Work out how much fabric is needed
  • Hems and seam allowances.
  • Insert zips
  • Make and use piping cord, pleats and frills to apply on to different stylish cushions, make loose chair covers and home accessories.
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
  • Maintaining a clean and safe workspace

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context of the craft and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

So that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.
