Tai Chi - Beginners

Course intent

Tai Chi is an ancient oriental art that over time helps revitalise mind, body and spirit through the learning and practice of “the form” (set sequences of movements performed slowly with precision). This course will introduce you to basic principles and exercises, so if you’ve never tried it before, or if you are coming back to Tai Chi after a long break, this is the course for you.

The intent of the course is to introduce you to the principles and practice of Tai Chi, and using a range of gentle but powerful exercises, to help you revitalise your mind, body and spirit

What will we cover?

You will learn a variety of exercises to develop balance, body awareness and mental focus to prepare you for learning the form. You will also be introduced to the form. Exercises are repeated frequently to consolidate learning and improve your practical abilities.

Your tutor may include Qigong exercises, which are complementary to the Tai Chi form.

Your tutor may include self-massage and other practices complementary to Tai Chi.

You will be able to practise the exercises at home and fit them in to your daily routine.

Our courses build on past learning, week by week, to develop new skills, understanding and abilities, and may involve small group sessions. You will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is designed for those with no prior experience of Tai Chi. It is also intended as a refresher for those wishing to return to Tai Chi practice.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need to wear comfortable, loose clothing, that will allow you to raise your arms above your head. Tai Chi is practiced in bare feet/socks/soft soled shoes.

Your tutor may suggest using household items to help you practice Tai Chi, but will discuss this with you beforehand, to give you time to find such items, or find suitable alternatives.

There are no extra costs on this course

What can I do when I finish the course?

At the end of the term, you may wish to re-enrol on the next Tai Chi - Beginners course, and at the end of the academic year, in discussion with your tutor, you may wish to progress to the Tai Chi - Improvers course
