Creative Glass - All Abilities

Course intent

Learners will be introduced to the beautiful and versatile art form. You will be shown the skills to produce a small leaded stained-glass panel to hang or 3D terrarium, a copper foil sun catcher and an appliqué panel. Improvers will have the option to use these 10 weeks to work on more complex projects with tutor guidance.

What will we cover?

• Working healthily and safely

  • The 10-week course will cover hand cutting glass and assembling the panel
  • The course will begin with cutting greenhouse glass, proceeding to a simple leaded panel or 3D terrarium
  • The second project will be a copper foil sun catcher, between 8 and 12 coloured glass pieces
  • The third project will use the appliqué technique, producing a beautiful piece of art using off cut from previous projects
  • Learners can develop their knowledge and techniques with more complex building in 3D

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Suitable for beginners with no previous knowledge and for learners with some experience who wish to expand their glasswork skills.

Please note: this course is not suitable for pregnant or lactating mothers.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

A sketchbook and pen.

Wear old clothes/apron and sensible, closed toe shoes (no sandals as glass splinters could be a problem). Week 1 – bring a piece of lining paper (wallpaper), pencil, Sharpie pen, ruler and rubber. For the second class you will need to bring a piece of coloured, 3mm thick (not less, not more, not toughened or safety glass) and about 1 sq. ft., and a wooden board to complete the lead panel or 3D terrarium. Detailed information will be given at the first session.

If you choose to work on a technique that requires a specialist face mask, you will be provided with one FFP3 mask at the beginning and you are expected to take this home and bring it back for all subsequent classes. Should you forget your mask, a replacement can be purchased from Reception. Materials you will need through the course will be discussed at induction and a guide list will be provided by your tutor with different suggestions to suit your budget.

If you have any queries, please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk
