Drawing and Sketching - All Abilities

Course intent

In this course you will learn and develop skills in drawing and sketching, focusing on drawing the natural world around us. We will explore tonal value, line, texture, proportion and perspective using various mediums and techniques in a supportive atmosphere. We will cover natural and human forms, still life, landscape and much more, also each term focusing on a famous master’s techniques.

What will we cover?

• Working healthily and safely

  • Learn the basic principles of observational drawing and sketching using line, tone, form, perspective and composition
  • A wide variety of drawing and sketching techniques using various dry mediums including graphite & coloured pencils, charcoal, pens and soft pastels
  • Practise developing your drawing skills using picture reference and working from life to draw various subjects and natural forms, landscapes and still life objects
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

So that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with you to complete the Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is suitable for all abilities, from beginners to those with a little more experience.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• a sketchbook and pen

  • any drawing materials you may already have
  • an A3 & A4 Sketchpad or cartridge paper
  • 2B, 4B, 6B pencils
  • a putty rubber and sharpener

Throughout the course you will also require various other drawing materials and the tutor will advise you what you need in advance.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor you may like to progress onto another course or one-day specialist workshops with SAL
