Cookery Essential Skills (Funded by HPT)

Course intent

This course will provide you with the must-know skills to prepare the basics in your home kitchen. This course is funded by Henrietta Parker Foundation.

What will we cover?

Delivered over 5 consecutive weeks with a course workbook which will contain all you need to know to complete successfully. The workbook will also contain further recipes you can use to practise in between lessons or after the course.

Essential Skills focusses on the absolute basics, including:

  • Soup Week: Introducing knife skills, boiling, simmering, tasting and flavours.
  • Stir Fry Week: Introducing sautéing, steaming and new flavours.
  • Curry Week: Introducing frying and marinades.
  • Tray Bake Week: What goes well with what?
  • Free choice Week: As agreed by the class.

Throughout the Essential Skills course you will also focus on:

  • Healthy eating and special diets
  • Basic mathematics
  • Food nutrition
  • Kitchen and personal hygiene
  • Consumer awareness
  • Creativity and new foods
  • Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

    This course is aimed at absolute beginners.

    This course is suitable for vegetarians and those with any specific dietary requirements.

    This course is taught in English

    What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

    All ingredients will be provided for you.

    Please bring an apron, tea-towels, and food containers to take your dishes home. You will receive an email before each lesson with exact information.

    Please tie hair back and wear clothes and footwear suitable for a kitchen.

    You will be asked to complete an allergies and food intolerance form before you start
