Jewellery & Silverwork - Beginners and Improvers

Course intent

If you are new to jewellery making, you will start building up basic skills and design ideas to create simple pieces of jewellery. If you have some experience, you will be challenged to develop and work on your own designs. Enjoy the well-being benefits of working in a friendly creative studio environment.

What will we cover?

Beginners will learn the basic skills needed to enable you to design and make simple pieces of jewellery. If you already have some experience, you will build on existing skills and learn new techniques to be able to design and create your own bespoke jewellery:

  • You will be shown the basic skills of sawing, filing, soldering, polishing and some texturing processes
  • You will be assisted with the design and construction of individual projects and may work in copper (which is provided) or silver, which you will need to purchase at an additional cost. Your tutor will advise on suppliers of precious metals
  • You will use a sketchbook to record processes and work on design ideas
  • Learn safe working practices in the jewellery studio.
  • Understand Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

This course will build on past learning, week by week, to develop new skills and you will find your own progress much easier if you attend every lesson.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Beginners and Improvers (those with some jewellery making experience).

An ability to read and follow instructions will be helpful as well as an ability to measure and do simple calculations. Jewellery making involves a lot of fine work so having steady hands will help.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Sensible closed-toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops)

  • Apron or overall to protect clothing
  • Small sketchbook or notebook and pen/pencil
  • Long hair must be tied back in the jewellery studio
  • Tools, equipment and base metals are provided. You are welcome to bring your own tools if you have them.
  • You may wish to purchase other precious metals and materials to use for individual projects e.g., silver, gemstones, beads etc.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners will have the opportunity to progress onto an Improvers class within Surrey Adult Learning or onto a specialist short-course or workshop.

The tutor will be happy to assist learners wishing to build a portfolio of work for entry to Further Education or suggest alternative courses of study with other providers.
