Sewing - Sew a Super Summer Sun Hat - Beginners

Course intent

Learn key, basic sewing skills as you use a simple pattern to make a personalised and creative sun hat: a hat just right for you, your child, grandson or daughter this summer. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

• fabric choice and preparation,

  • using a simple paper pattern (provided or bring your own)
  • cutting out
  • sewing straight and curved seams and
  • top-stitching using a sewing machine
  • adding a small amount of machined applique, lace or other embellishments
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This workshop is for beginners who have a small amount of basic sewing knowledge or those who are returning to sewing and want to refresh their skills. Little experience is necessary, although some familiarity with fabric and thread would be useful, whilst some knowledge of a sewing machine and being able to sew straight lines would be beneficial.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• your own fabrics

  • thread
  • any additonal components for your individual project and for testing techniques and machine stitche.
  • basic sewing equipment, eg pins, tapemeasure, fabric marker and scissors etc.
  • a notepad, pen and pencil.

Sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the workshop.

A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring and where to source fabrics.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Sewing, Embroidery, Patchwork, Quilting and Appliqué courses will be offered throughout the year by Surrey Adult Learning to develop the newly acquired skills and this subject area. Occasional Saturday classes and other Needlecraft classes will also be offered.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
