Sewing for Home - Indoor/Outdoor Box Cushion Workshop

Course intent

You will learn how to create a custom-sized box cushion through hands-on instruction. Learners typically learn sewing techniques, fabric selection, and padding options to craft comfortable and aesthetically pleasing cushions for various purposes including cushions for your garden bench or outdoor sofa. What will we cover?

• How to measure for your box cushion cover

• How to cut out the fabric
• How to to assemble the box cushion
• How to apply a zip
• How to make piping to create a professional finish.
• Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Some sewing experience is essential. You must be familiar with how to sew using a sewing machine. As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Based on a 50cm square cushion:

• 70cm zip to match your fabric colour
• 2 meters of fabric suitable for your box cushion
• 2 meters of piping cord 8mm
• Foam - 50cm square/ 10cm depth
• thread
• pins
• tape
• measure
• chalk
• scissors
• a seam unpicker

Please contact the tutor if you wish to make a different size cushion as you will need different amounts of fabric and a different size of foam for your cushion. You can email adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk and copy in isabel.gomes@surreycc.gov.uk if you need any further advice.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor you may like to progress onto our longer Sewing for the Home Soft Furnishings courses or enhance your learning on our Upholstery courses. We offer other sewing clothes and embroidery Saturday workshops throughout the year.
