Patchwork - A Log Cabin Cushion for the Summer (Beginners & Improvers)

Course intent

This hands-on workshop focusses on the traditional log-cabin patchwork block. In learning how to construct the block, you’ll develop the skills needed to start a new creative hobby, or extend your existing skills guided by expert tuition. The log cabin block looks good on its own and great in multiples - four works well for a cushion square. Your cushion would fit into many settings and seasons.

Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

• Fabric choice and preparation

  • Colour combinations
  • Cutting out using a rotary cutter
  • Tips to improve accuracy when constructing the block and pressing.
  • Adding a border to the block
  • Quilting or backing the block and
  • Making the blocks up into a cushion or alternative product
  • Variations to the traditional block, if you feel confident
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.
