Sewing - Hand Embroidery - Visible Mending

Course intent

You will learn simple methods for mending clothes with rips, holes and stains to give the garment a new lease of life while saving it from landfill. Inspired by the Japanese techniques of Sashiko and Kintsugi, the idea is to celebrate the garment and its repair by making the mend visible whilst adding personality to the item and finishing with an individual piece.

You can bring along your old clothes or work on pieces of fabric samples to try the techniques before stitching onto your garments.

If you are keen to do your bit for the planet and want to stitch more, then this is the course for you.

You will learn with a RSN (Royal School of Needlework) trained professional embroiderer and RSN tutor who has recently won has won the Embroiders Guild, Beryl Dean Award for Teaching Excellence.

Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through learning embroidery in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

• Surface stitches to cover small holes

  • Darning to cover medium holes
  • Patching to cover larger holes
  • Stitches to enhance stains.
  • Different options for stabilising worn fabrics
  • Exploring lots of ideas for personalising items.
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.
