Jewellery & Silverwork - A Day in the Studio

Course intent

You will learn the skills and techniques needed to progress your jewellery project from a previous workshop or longer course. If you want to start a new project, this day will get you started. A day in the studio provides you with the time and resources to further your jewellery learning journey. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

• You will learn the techniques needed for your individual level and piece.

  • Problem solving
  • Fixing any previous faults in your project
  • Construction
  • Using tools and equipment safely
  • The importance of a clean and tidy studio
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values
  • Bezel setting can be included within this course. Other styles of stone setting would require a longer course.

You will be shown samples, and it is suggested that you might like to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback you receive from your tutor. There will be demonstrations, instruction and one-to-one tutorial guidance.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This workshop is aimed at learners wishing to work on, or finish off existing jewellery projects, for instance jewellery pieces started during other workshops or longer courses with SAL. Basic jewellery making techniques should be known for this course, which should include:

  • Piercing metal
  • Annealing
  • Soldering

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

There will be some copper, and brass plus a limited amount of silver available on the day but learners will be expected to provide:

  • Your own Jewellery project
  • Any unusual materials you are using that might not be available at the centre
  • Any larger amounts of silver
  • Any gemstones if using
  • Any gold if using and gold solder.
  • Design inspiration such as photos and sketches if starting a new project.
  • Notebook and pen/pencil
  • Wear closed toe shoes
  • Remove long scarves
  • Long hair to be tied back
  • An apron or wear old clothes

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can progress onto other Arts & Crafts courses with SAL. Your tutor teaches Wednesday morning and afternoon and Thursday evenings in Guildford and runs regular Saturday and Summer Skills workshops.

The tutor will be happy to assist learners wishing to build a portfolio of work for entry to Further Education or alternative courses of study with other providers.
