Patchwork & Quilting - Quilt a Pretty Breakfast Set - Beginners

Course intent

Enjoy a sewing day learning the art of machine quilting. Make and personalise a pretty breakfast set comprising of a placemat and mug-rug for yourself or to give as a gift. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

• Quilting [not patchwork, although the two are frequently combined]

  • Cover fabric choice and preparation
  • Cutting out using a rotary cutter
  • Preparing the fabrics, wadding and sewing machine ready to quilt
  • Using a sewing machine
  • Quilting patterns and finishing the product edges
  • General information regarding the quilting of larger items will be given
  • Quilt examples will be available to view and discuss
  • There will be opportunity to share ideas
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This workshop is for anyone who is starting out on their quilting journey. No experience is necessary, although some familiarity with fabric, thread and a sewing machine would be useful.

Learners with additional needs and disabilities are welcome. Please let staff know if you require any extra support when you enrol and they will arrange for a member of the Supported Learning Team to contact you to discuss your support needs. As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring and where to source fabrics.

  • You are required to provide your own fabrics, thread and additonal components for your individual project and for testing techniques and machine stitches.
  • You will also need basic sewing equipment, eg pins, needles and scissors etc.
  • A notepad, pen and pencil will always be useful.

Sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the workshop.

What can I do when I finish the course?

This workshop can be studied in isolation or considered as an introduction into a much larger subject area that makes a creative hobby.
