Life & Portrait - Drawing & Painting with Life Model - All Abilities

Course intent

This one-day workshop will enable you to develop skills and know-how to in life drawing and painting. You will discover new techniques and strengthen existing observational drawing skills, working exclusively from the unclothed figure, and using a variety of poses.

What will we cover?

• Measuring and proportion

  • Composition and scale
  • Negative space
  • Rhythm and gesture
  • Specific tuition on techniques for learners’ chosen materials
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All abilities; experience in your chosen painting medium is useful. For less experienced learners we advise starting with pencil and charcoal.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• An apron

  • Charcoal and pencils.
  • Drawing Paper minimum size A2.
  • Your chosen painting materials e.g., oil, acrylic paint and canvas or watercolour and watercolour paper.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto a longer life drawing course or courses in other media with Surrey Adult Learning. Help can be given to develop a portfolio to apply for Art college if required. You can study further by visiting art galleries.
