Watercolour - Absolute Beginners

Course intent

You will learn the basic and key knowledge and skills needed as an absolute beginner to draw and paint using watercolour paint. Your tutor teaches using step by step demonstrations and a range of subject matter so that you will be able to see your skills growing over the course. What will we cover?

· Key drawing techniques · Key watercolour techniques · Colour mixing · Which pencil, paper and brush to use · You will be taught using varying subject matter · Proportion and scale · When & how to paint in great detail & when/how to simplify for speed. · The tutor will provide images for you to work from

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and cri-tiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Complete Beginners in Watercolour painting. The class is for those wanting to learn how to draw and paint in watercolour who have never used watercolour paints before.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

· Watercolour pad (300gsm paper, surface NOT/textured) · Watercolour paints (tutor uses St. Petersburg Whitenights but Winsor and Newton Cotman watercolours have half pan sets that are a good quality, and reasonably priced.) · Mixing palette (you can use a white plate or the lid of your paints to get started. · Brushes, round sizes 2, 4 & 6 or similar- Any brushes you already have. Rosemary & Co make good brushes, and their golden synthetic series 301 size 2, short handle (7 inches) costs under £3. · Pencil · Eraser · jar or container for water.

What can I do when I finish the course?

This course will introduce you to watercolour and you may like to continue in the Autumn Term with a Beginners watercolour class with this tutor. Learners can progress onto other Arts & Crafts courses with SAL, including Drawing & Illustration with this tutor in Guildford
