Drawing & Painting - Abstract Painting - All Abilities

Course intent

Explore different approaches to making abstract art through compelling visual presentations, and a broad look at the use of colour, tone, composition, texture and paint application

What will we cover?

• A variety of paint techniques will be demonstrated and explained by the tutor, who will encourage an imaginative, sensitive and individual handling of paint

  • You will become familiar with visual language by looking at abstract art from the early 20th century to the present day
  • We will cover different methods of arriving at abstraction – e.g. starting from observation, using experimental methods and translating different sensory information.

This course will build on past learning, week by week, to develop new abilities. You will find your own progress much easier if you attend every lesson.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All abilities welcome although particularly suitable for improvers and those with a basic understanding of modern abstract painting.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

The tutor will recommend some materials. It is recommended you bring a basic kit of acrylic or oil paint set (60ml tubes), paintbrushes, pencils, rubber, eraser, and either oil or acrylic painting pad of at least A3 size. If you choose to use oil paint you will also need artist's turpentine or an equivalent thinner. You will also need a sketchbook to plan and record your techniques and to reflect on your progress. You can also email the tutor with your queries at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

You will need to complete some course documentation to help assess your progress.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto other courses exploring different genres of art using different media or build a portfolio for art college.
