Jewellery & Silverwork - All Abilities

Course intent

In this course beginners will get to know to the world of jewellery design and manufacture, whilst more experienced learners will enhance their skills and progress onto more complex techniques. You will develop design and making skills to enable you to turn a design concept into a piece of wearable jewellery.

What will we cover?

• The basic techniques involved in designing and creating a simple piece of jewellery

  • Developing your creativity, skills and techniques to make more complex pieces
  • Work on your own projects with guidance from the tutor.
  • Working safely in the Jewellery studio
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This is a class for beginners and those with some previous experience. Learners should have basic dexterity and be able to read and follow instructions.

Classes are taught in English. Please let us know during the enrolment process if you have any concerns about this.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Copper is provided, however learners will need to purchase any precious metals used for individual projects e.g. silver, gemstones, beads, enamels and findings

  • Wear sensible, closed toe shoes
  • An apron or wear old clothes
  • A notepad and pencil
  • Long hair also needs to be tied back in the jewellery studio.

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    Learners may wish to attend other Jewellery Workshops or Surrey Adult Learning courses or progress onto a foundation course at college.

    We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
