Patchwork & Quilting Workshop - The Tree of Life

Course intent

Got the basics? Challenge yourself with this super half square triangle block. Add a border and make it into a cushion, table-centre mat or develop it into something different. This leafy tree is great to display in summer or gift to a special person.

What will we cover?

• Making half square triangles (HST)

  • Tips for accuracy
  • Fabric choice, colour combinations
  • Preparation, cutting out using a rotary cutter and making the 2 ½ inch HSTs
  • Joining the HSTs and square units to form rows
  • Creating a 16 ½ inch unfinished square ‘Tree of Life’ patchwork block
  • Adding a border
  • Quilting or backing the block
  • Making up into a cushion or alternative product
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This workshop will suit improvers and learners who have some basic skills under their belt. Familiarity with fabric, thread and the ability to straight stitch on a sewing machine is essential.

For adults aged 18 years or older.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

  • Tapemeasure
  • Fabric marker
  • Scissors etc.
  • Fabrics
  • Thread
  • Additonal components for your individual project
  • Scraps for testing techniques and machine stitches
  • Notepad, pen and pencil

A ‘needs list’ will be sent out before the start of the workshop which will include what you need to bring and where to source fabrics.

Sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the workshop.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Patchwork, Quilting and Appliqué courses are offered throughout the year by Surrey Adult Learning to develop the newly acquired skills and this subject area.
