Patchwork & Quilting - Beginners & Improvers

Course intent

On this course you will enhance skills in patchwork, quilting and appliqué. Learners will have the opportunity to begin, develop, refine and broaden their patchwork, quilting and appliqué knowledge and skills base according to their level. You’ll gain skill and confidence to develop interesting and creative quilts and projects using a variety of techniques and designs.

  • Accurate cutting
  • Sewing straight seams
  • Pressing
  • Making blocks to a specific design
  • Piecing by hand and machine
  • Fast strip piecing methods
  • Improvisation
  • Hand and machine quilting
  • Binding and edge finishes
  • English paper piecing
  • Foundation piecing
  • Applique
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

For learners completely new to patchwork as well as those with some experience.

Please note: more complex projects may take longer than one term to complete.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Fabrics and threads to complete your individual projects

basic sewing equipment

  • Pins
  • Needles
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure etc
  • Additional fabrics for testing and trailling techniques and machine sittches
  • Notepad, pen and pencil

Rotary cutting equipment and sewing machines belonging to the centre are available to use during the course.

A ‘needs list’ will be sent out prior to the start of the courses which will include where to go to source fabric.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Patchwork, quilting and appliqué courses are offered throughout the year by Surrey Adult Learning to develop skills in this subject area.
