French Brush Up

Course intent

Did you learn a language at school and want to pick it back up again? Are you feeling a little rusty on the grammar and vocabulary? Then our Brush Up courses are perfect to help you revise beginner level language and re-build your confidence before continuing your language-learning journey

What will we cover?

Brush Up courses last for one term and will refresh your basic language knowledge to help you handle everyday situations. You will revise topics such as:

• greetings, food and drink, numbers, and prices.
• talking about daily life
• expressing likes and dislikes
• talking about hobbies, holidays and sport
• following directions and using public transport

Our language courses are designed to get you speaking the language from day one. You will also have the chance to practise your listening, reading and writing skills, and learn some essential grammar.

Our experienced tutors will tailor the course to ensure that every learner reaches their own language-learning goals. They may give you additional tasks to complete outside of the lesson to help you make the most of your course

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Brush Up language courses are for those who have some experience with the language in the past and want to restart after a break in learning. For example, you may have completed a GCSE in the language several years ago.

If you have studied the language for two years or more and regularly use it in everyday situations, you may find a Beyond Beginners course more suitable. You can also complete our self-assessment (available in the Languages section of the Surrey Adult Learning website) to find the best level for you

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

We recommend bringing paper and pen to every lesson so you can make notes.

Your tutor will also advise you of any required course books, which typically cost £15-30. They will also be able to recommend other optional resources that you may find useful for your learning

What can I do when I finish the course?

After completing the Brush Up course, your tutor can advise you of the most suitable course for you to continue your learning journey with us. For most learners, this will be a Beyond Beginners course which correspond to A2 Elementary Level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
