Calligraphy - Beginners & Improvers

Course intent

In this course you will become familiar with the art of calligraphy using historical manuscripts to study the alphabets and writing with a broad-edged dip pen. Those with some experience will concentrate on exploring more complex layouts together with a new script if appropriate. You will be encouraged to create your own personal projects.

Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

What will we cover?

Beginners

  • the lower-case Italic Hand, followed by Roman Capitals - both basic scripts, ideal for beginners
  • using a broad-edged pen

Improvers

  • explore a new script
  • experiment with layout, weight and variations of lettering
  • colour, design and layout
  • related decorative techniques
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided
