Sewing - Hand Embroidery Workshop - Experimental Embroidery - Improvers

Course intent

During this session you will have the opportunity to explore some commonly used stitches to create varied textures for an embroidery piece either inspired by an image or an abstract form of your choice. You will be shown how to get started and will explore the embroidery stitches required to complete a design

You will learn with a RSN (Royal School of Needlework) trained professional embroiderer and RSN tutor who has recently won has won the Embroiders Guild, Beryl Dean Award for Teaching Excellence.

What will we cover?

• the most useful and most commonly used stitches to enable you to gain confidence in embroidery

  • preparation techniques for framing up fabric and adding applique pieces with both traditional methods and fabric manipulation
  • using various textured threads to experiment with couching methods
  • creating wandering lines
  • applying beads and sequins for some texture and sparkle.
  • surface stitches to add texture and depth to the details
  • different options for design source and embroidery inspiration
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is best suited to those with some experience of embroidery and who are confident in their stitching, If you are unsure about your level please contact the tutor by emailing adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need a notebook & pencil, some coloured fabrics for the base and the applique, some organza, scrim or net, a variety of stranded cottons, some thick threads for couching, beads and sequins, some different sized needles and embroidery scissors, embroidery hoop.

These and other optional equipment will be available for sale during the class in case you do not have any or are unable source any before the session.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto a longer embroidery course with Surrey Adult Learning for a more in depth personal development including designing your own work or to other embroidery related or sewing courses to enhance further learning.
