Life & Portrait - Drawing & Painting with Model - Workshop

Course intent

During this engaging workshop you will explore different ways of portraying the human form. Experienced learners will enjoy having more time to concentrate on a longer pose than is possible in their weekly classes. Beginners will enjoy full support from the experienced tutor.

What will we cover?

This one-day course will include dealing with the basic principles of figure drawing including a model either clothed or unclothed, using measuring techniques, plotting negative spaces and learning composition.

Students will be encouraged to use a variety of materials: charcoal, pastel, ink and paint etc. Teaching is on a class and one to one basis and includes short and longer poses.

Learning goals are:

  • To see simplified geometric forms within the body.
  • To understand the body shape and its proportions.
  • To learn quick drawing techniques.
  • To experiment with different mark making techniques.
  • To enjoy the drawing experience
  • You will learn about the tools used and be able to demonstrate their safe use.
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• Drawing paper - size A1/A2 and an A1/A2 flip chart of cheap paper is needed for quick sketches

  • Charcoal of mixed sizes
  • Pencils
  • Putty rubber/eraser
  • Bulldog clips or masking tape for the board
  • Tissue or kitchen towels
  • Pastels

    What can I do when I finish the course?

    In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further life drawing with this tutor, drawing, painting, sculpture and illustration classes or if you wish to put a portfolio together for entrance to an art college then this is a distinct advantage.
