Career Building Blocks – Preparing to Work in Schools

Course intent

The course will provide learners with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to support the learning and development of children and young people in a non-teaching role within a school or other educational setting. The courses are taught by tutors who have experience of teaching in schools. So, if you have a passion for education and want to make a positive impact in your community, this is the perfect place to start!

What will we cover?

Learners will develop an understanding of the education system, principles of safeguarding, effective communication, teamwork, and how to handle common challenges that may arise when working with children and young people. Assessment: You will work towards the OCNLR Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools. Learners are assessed through activities that are internally set by tutor/assessors and then, following internal moderation, learners’ portfolios of assessed evidence will be externally moderated by an OCN London External Moderator.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This is a one-year course for adults aged 19 or over. The course is suitable for learners who: • are about to, or have recently started, or hope to soon be able to, work in a school or learning centre for young people in a non-teaching capacity, either as a paid employee or as a volunteer, •would like to improve their existing skills set and knowledge relevant to their role within a school or other learning centre for pupils or young people. Entry Requirements: Completion of a written and an online initial assessment prior to attending an interview. In addition to attending your classes, to be successful, you will need to work independently so we recommend that learners further develop their learning skills and understanding outside the classroom through use of the Internet, Moodle, BKSB and visits to/volunteering in schools or learning centres for pupils or young children. Please note: You need to have access to a computer or a laptop and a printer.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need to bring a ring binder, lined paper, pens and pencils with you. Depending on your eligibility, there are no tuition, registration, or examination fees to pay for this course if: •You are UK national and have lived in the UK continuously for three years. •You are a UK national and have lived in either the EEA only, or EEA and UK only for at least the last three years. •You are an EEA national with pre-settled or settled status (under the EU settlement scheme) and have lived continuously in the EEA, Gibraltar, or the UK for at least three years.

  • You are a non-UK national with permission granted by the UK government to live in the UK continuously for at least three years.

What can I do when I finish the course?

The OCNLR Level 1 Award in Preparing to Work in Schools will help you to improve your career prospects. It will also maximise the opportunity for successful candidates to gain entry to employment in anon-teaching role within a school or other educational setting.
