About this subjectESOL

We offer free English courses for speakers of other languages so that you can study or find work. These include ESOL, English for HongKongers, and English for Ukrainians.

We offer both face-to-face and online courses. You must complete an assessment to place you in the right course based on your current skill level. Following the assessment, we will provide you with an offer for an appropriate course.

Once you finish your assessments, we will send you a course timetable.


(ESOL) English for speakers of other languages

At Surrey Adult Learning, we provide a wide range of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses. Some of our courses are conducted face-to-face, while others are offered online for added flexibility.

We hold courses online and in person at one of our centres. The centres are in: Guildford, Camberley, Sunbury, and Molesey. To ensure you can attend exams, we advise you live within a 30 to 40 minute travel distance from one of our centres.

Eligibility criteria

ESOL courses at Surrey Adult Learning are free for adults aged 19 or over on the 31 August 2024 who meet the following eligibility criteria.

If you are not eligible for a free course under the above criteria, you may need to pay a fee. For more information and advice please email: adultskills@surreycc.gov.uk


English and other courses for HongKongers

We offer free English, arts, crafts, wellness and business courses to HongKongers arriving in Britain on a British Nationals (Overseas) visa. You can find more information about courses on the Hongkongers webpage.

English for Ukrainians

Complete expression of interest form for English for Ukrainians

Our English language courses are free for Ukrainian nationals who entered the UK via the Ukraine Family Scheme or the Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme

To attend, you must be a Ukrainian national aged 19 or over on 31 August 2024 and have:

  • a Ukrainian passport endorsed with a 6 month entry stamp from the UK Border Force;
  • a biometric residence permit (BRP) showing the applicable 'Ukraine Scheme' leave; or
  • documents from the UK Home Office showing proof of your immigration status.
