Surrey Arts' teacher, Catherine Williams, has been shortlisted for the Music and Drama in Education Awards 2025 in the category of 'Instrumental or Vocal Teacher of the Year'. The Music and Drama in Education Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in Music and Drama education. They recognise individuals, schools, and organisations that have made a significant impact in these fields, showcasing excellence in teaching, innovation, and leadership.
Catherine says 'I am honoured to be a finalist in the Music and Drama awards 2025 under the instrumental or vocal teacher of the year category. The recognition of being nominated and becoming a finalist is incredibly meaningful to me as it acknowledges my dedication and passion for teaching percussion. I enjoy seeing my students develop into better musicians and seeing how music helps and develops a person in so many different ways. It is wonderful to have the formal recognition and acknowledgement that my passion and dedication to teaching is of a high standard and is valued and making a difference in my students' lives'.
Catherine, who teaches percussion and leads the Surrey County Percussion Ensemble, always aims to ensure that students enjoy their lessons and make progress each week and she listens to what they want to achieve. 'My role is not just about sharing my technical knowledge but to give students inspiration to become good musicians and harvest a love of music.'
The Surrey Arts Head of Service, Sarah Lee, said 'We are thrilled that Catherine has been nominated for this prestigious award and proud that one of our teachers has been recognised for their hard work and dedication to providing high quality music education for young people in Surrey.'
Congratulations also go to Winston Churchill School, Surrey, which has been shortlisted in the Best Music Department category.
The winners will be announced on Thursday 30 January 2025 at the Royal National Hotel in London.
