Family Learning - Phonics for EAL Families Workshop

What will I learn?

On this FREE online 2-hour workshop, you will work with the tutor and other parents and carers to find out about phonics and how they are taught at school.

• Understand the terms teachers and children use
• Learn about different phonics schemes schools use
• Learn reading tips and games you can play with your child
• Share useful websites and resources

Is this course for me?

If you are new to the UK or went to school in another country and are a parent/carer of a child aged 4-11 this workshop will help you understand what phonics are and how they are taught in school. If you have booked on the English for EAL Families 5-week course, you do not need to attend this separate workshop.

Intent

You will develop your skills and knowledge in phonics and how to support your child and know where to find out more information. This will be positive for your family.

What do I need to do?

• Have my camera on

• Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course.
• Please attend all sessions
• A reliable internet connection
• A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera
• A pen and paper
• Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
• Fill out `Tell us what you think` form
• Contact us on family.learning@surreycc.gov.uk if you have any questions

What could I do next?

You could attend one of our 5-week courses for parents who speak English as an additional language.

At the end of this workshop, we will give you details of what you can move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning such as ESOL or Maths, join a college or get a job.
