Family Learning - First Steps to Understanding and Responding to my Child: Self-harm

What will I learn?

This is a FREE three-week online course designed to provide parents and carers with an understanding of self-harm among young people, as well as strategies for support and self-care, you will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of the reasons why young people may self-harm.

  • Understand Self Harm: explore behaviour why young people may turn to self-harm as a coping mechanism.
  • Cycle of Self Harm: gain understanding of its repetitive nature and potential triggers.
  • Indicators of Self Harm: learn to recognise the signs and behaviours in young people
  • Is this course for me?

    This course is for parents/carers who reside in Surrey with children and young people who want to understand the reasons behind self-harming and how they can support their young person or child.

    Intent

    This course will give parents/carers the first step tools to obtain the skills and knowledge needed to make a lasting positive impact and change to family life.

    What do I need to do?

    • Keep your camera on

    • Provide a mobile phone number and email address when you enrol so that we can contact you about your course.
    • Please attend all sessions
    • A reliable internet connection
    • A computer/laptop/tablet or phone with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and camera
    • A pen and paper
    • Check your email for detailed joining instructions two days before course starts.
    • Fill out the `Getting to know you` form and fill out `Tell us what you think` form.

    • What could I do next?

      At the end of this course, we will give you details of what you may wish to move on to next, for example volunteering, further courses with Surrey Adult Learning, a college or employment.
