Sewing - Hand Embroidery Workshop - Beginners & Improvers

Course intent

You will learn to create the stitches of the wonderful versatility of embroidery. Beginners will choose designs to work on that will incorporate the most important basic embroidery stitches. Those with more experience will work on more complex designs and develop more stitches and techniques. If you have a design that you are stuck with then bring it along and find your inspiration again. If your design is not completed in this class, you will have all the skills needed to complete it at home. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through learning embroidery in a friendly, creative learning environment.

You will learn with an Royal School of Needlework (RSN) trained professional embroiderer and RSN tutor who has recently won has won the Embroiders Guild, Beryl Dean Award for Teaching Excellence.

What will we cover?

• Preparation techniques for framing up fabric

  • Tracing the design
  • Separating threads
  • Getting started on your design
  • The stitches required to complete your design
  • The most embroidery useful and commonly used stitches
  • Techniques and stitches to help you to progress to the next level
  • Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner on their Individual Learning Plan.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All abilities welcome. If you have never done any embroidery before, or you want to reawaken long lost skills, or you have a design that you cannot complete then this workshop is for you.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

You will need:

  • a pencil
  • some light-coloured cotton fabric (e.g. calico)
  • a variety of stranded cottons
  • some different sized needles
  • embroidery scissors
  • an 8-inch ring frame will be preferred but any size is acceptable

These items and other optional equipment will be available to purchase on the day at additional cost.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can progress onto longer embroidery or sewing courses or continue with alternative courses of study with other providers.
