Upholstery - Beginners

Course intent

You will learn basic upholstery skills including the understanding of traditional and modern upholstery techniques.

You will enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment

What will we cover?

• Working healthily and safely.

  • Understanding of traditional (springs, hair etc.) and modern (foam) upholstery techniques.
  • Stripping of furniture, basic wood repairs.
  • Choosing and applying the correct fillings, upholstery fabric and sundries.
  • Other techniques - Deep & shallow buttoning, making up piping cord & box cushions
  • Safeguarding, Prevent & British Values

Learners will be inspired by the contemporary and historical context and will need to keep a sketchbook / notebook to record ideas, processes and progress, and the feedback they receive from the tutor.

There will be demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.

To ensure that learners make good progress with their personal learning goals, the tutor will work with the learner to complete the required Individual Learning Plan.

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Suitable for beginners or those with a little or more experience who may have done a one-day workshop.

If your piece of furniture has materials that have been made fire retardant, these will contain persistent organic pollutants, POPs. Due to new Health & Safety law, if you remove this material from the furniture, you will need to take the material away yourself and dispose of it off the premises.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

• A sketchbook and pen.

  • Small/medium item of furniture to be upholstered: stool, dining chair, small armchair or headboard.
  • Any upholstery tools you may have.

What can I do when I finish the course?

In discussion with your tutor, you may like to progress onto further Upholstery and Furniture Restoration, or other Arts & Crafts courses
