Photography - The Art & Techniques of Digital Photography - Improvers (Online)

Course intent

On this online advanced creative photography course, we will explore how to use your camera in the most effect way, expanding your knowledge of technical tips and minimize time in front of the computer. Discover and explore your own photographic style and look at the world with a photographer’s eye.

This course is for any camera user (D-SLR, Bridge camera and Mirrorless camera) with the abilities changing Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO.

What will we cover?

In a fun, creative, friendly, and supportive learning environment we will be covering:

  • Through research discovering and exploring other photographer’s work
  • Understand what makes a good photograph
  • There will be practical and technical exercises
  • Weekly homework will be given
  • Be encouraged to take part in group discussions and feedback/evaluations of the projects throughout the course
  • The overall aim is to help you develop personal expression through a mixture of practical exercises & discussions

For courses of more than one session, you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

The course is suitable for those who have completed a beginner (and possibly an improvers course) or who have a good working knowledge of your camera. If you have not completed a Photography course with Surrey Adult Learning, it is advisable to check with the tutor before enrolling by emailing adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk. It is essential that you have your own camera and understand how to work in Manual settings, setting the exposure manually.

This course will be delivered through live online sessions using Zoom.

To fully participate in this course, you will need:

  • An email address
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer/laptop /tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably Google Chrome), microphone and webcam.

Once enrolled on this course you will receive detailed instructions for taking part online.

You will need to complete some course documentation to help assess your progress.

This course will be using ZOOM for Education

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Materials: You will need your own digital camera with a memory card, at least one lens and the instruction booklet. Please ensure that the batteries are fully charged.

Please bring a notebook and pen to take notes. You will need to be capable of downloading your images to share with class & homework will be set. A tripod is needed throughout the course.

For the Zoom lesson: you will need access to a computer/laptop/tablet with a reliable internet connection, working microphone, and webcam. If you struggle to read printed text on a screen, you may find it beneficial to have access to a printer to make your own hard copies of resources.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners can progress onto specific workshops and other courses with Surrey Adult Learning.
