Sewing - Essential Skills - Beginners (HPT)

Course intent

The intent for this course is to give you the sewing skills to help you find employment in the future. Enjoy the well-being benefits gained through working in a friendly, creative learning environment.

This course is primarily funded by the Henrietta Parker Trust and as such learners will only need to pay a minimal course fee. For more information on the Trust, please see the dedicated page on our website.

What will we cover?

You will be introduced to:

  • Basic sewing skills
  • Sewing equipment
  • Sewing machine skills
  • Hand sewing and finishing skills
  • Altering garments to fit
  • Taking up hemlines on trousers or skirts
  • Hems and edge finishes
  • Correct fitting
  • Seam and raw edge finishes
  • Necklines and collars
  • Sleeves and cuffs
  • Openings and fastenings including zips

Where this course consists of more than one session you will find you make the most progress if you attend every taught lesson and complete any self-directed study opportunities provided.

Beginners who are looking to upskill for employment.

As this course is primarily funded by the Henrietta Parker Trust (HPT), Learners can enrol for one Sewing course as part of the HPT per Academic Year (3 terms). We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol, please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
