Introduction to Japanese (Online)

Course intent

Get to grips with a global language!

If you want to try something new and pick up some basic phrases, then this is the ideal course for you. It will also give you a chance to find out what it’s like to learn a language with Surrey Adult Learning.

What will we cover?

This course is designed to teach you simple, practical language that you can use to survive in another country. We will cover:

  • Greetings
  • Talking about yourself
  • Numbers 1-100
  • Ordering food and drink

You’ll get plenty of practice in breakout rooms to learn to speak in sentences and develop your listening skills.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is planned with the absolute beginner in mind, so you do not need any previous knowledge of the language.

It corresponds to the lower A1 Beginner level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for Languages. For further guidance on choosing the right level, please complete a self-assessment form, available in the Languages section on the Surrey Adult Learning website.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

We recommend bringing paper and pen to every lesson so you can make notes.

This course will be delivered through live online sessions using Zoom. To fully participate in this course, you will need:

  • An email address
  • A reliable internet connection
  • A computer / laptop / tablet with a fully updated browser, microphone and webcam.
  • If you struggle to read printed text on a screen and you want to print resources, you will need access to a printer.

Once enrolled, you will receive detailed instructions for taking part online.

What can I do when I finish the course?

We offer a variety of language courses suitable for all abilities and your tutor can advise you on the options available to you. Some of our courses are currently running online and others are based in one of our centres.
