Ancient Greek Beginners - Module 3

Course intent

Are you fascinated by the history of Greece? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to read an original text in Ancient Greek? Now you can with our Beginners course in Ancient Greek. This course will introduce you to basic vocabulary, grammar and structures in the context of simple, adapted texts in the language

What will we cover?

Throughout the course, you will develop your language skills and be able to read simplified text in the original Ancient Greek. There are six modules in the course, each one building on the last. We will cover topics such as:

  • verb and noun groups
  • adjectives
  • numbers
  • word order
  • the past and the future tenses
  • translation techniques

Courses are designed to give you an understanding of how the language works so that you can use this knowledge to effectively translate simple texts into English. There will also be opportunities to translate simple sentences into Ancient Greek.

Our experienced tutors will tailor the course to suit the class to ensure that every learner reaches their own language-learning goals. They may give you additional tasks to complete outside of the lesson to help you make the most of your course.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is planned with the absolute beginner in mind, so you do not need any previous knowledge of the language

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring a notepad and pen.

Your tutor will advise you of any required course books. These typically cost £15 - £30 and will be used for more than one term / year.

You may wish to purchase additional study aids such as CDs, workbooks, dictionaries, and grammar books, which are optional

What can I do when I finish the course?

The Beginners course runs over six modules and two years. When you have finished one module, you will be ready to move on to the next.

After completing all six modules, you will have achieved the equivalent of a GCSE course in Ancient Greek.
