Horse riding safely

It is important that all road users behave in a safe, responsible and courteous manner when using the highway. Please see the Highway Code's advice to horse riders and drivers.

Riding a horse can be very rewarding, but whether you are an expert or just a beginner at riding there is always the risk of accidents when riding on the road. Although careless and irresponsible drivers exist, increasing the safety awareness of horse riders can help reduce this risk.

The British Horse Society road safety web page has more details, including details of riding and road safety courses it runs, ensuring that new riders are confident and safe when using public roads. The test addresses practical riding skills, dealing with traffic and Highway Code theory. It is also emphasised that riders need to wear bright, high visibility clothing.
