About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Leadership Office for a Business Manager to support the Chief Executive. We currently have an Interim Chief Executive, with our permanent Chief Executive due to join us in the summer.

Your focus will be on providing exemplary support to the Chief Executive and be a direct link between the Corporate Leadership Team, Cabinet and wider democratic services putting you at the very heart of the Council. You will ensure the Chief Executive is well briefed for all meetings and up to speed with the latest developments across the organisation. You will be working alongside a team of Business Managers in the Leadership Office whose remit cut across the whole organisation.

You should possess strong inter-personal skills and be confident in engaging with senior officers. You will be required to lead on supporting the Corporate Leadership Team meetings- managing the forward plan of business, co-ordinating meeting papers, taking notes and capturing actions. You will play an active role in supporting other large-scale events across the organisation, developing agendas and managing forward plans in line with the Council's strategic priorities.

It's a fast paced and varied role with rarely a dull moment! To excel in this role, you will need strong time management and prioritisation skills, the ability to multi-task and be effective in relationship building and negotiation. Your ability to look to the horizon, pre-empt needs, meet challenges with appropriate solutions and keep the lines of communication open will be key to your success. You will have line management responsibility for a small team of Executive Support Officers.

In all that you do, you will exemplify our values, be politically sensitive and be able to act as a calm, reassuring and effective point of contact.

Shortlisting Criteria
To apply, alongside your CV, you will be asked to answer the following questions:
  1. Please tell us about your motivations for applying for this role and why you would be an excellent candidate.
  2. Describe a time when you used your stakeholder management and negotiation skills to overcome a problem. What was the outcome and impact of this, and what do you think good customer service looks like?
  3. Provide an example of a time you managed competing priorities. What skills and tools did you use to help you and what was the outcome?

To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:
  • Experience working within a fast-paced working environment and managing competing priorities and an ability to work to tight deadlines
  • Ability to operate in a political and senior management environment, with a proven ability of building relationships and holding confidence to manage the interface between members and officers
  • Experience of working in a highly complex and challenging environment working with senior stakeholders in a diligent, trustworthy way, and with a commitment to delivering high quality outputs
  • Excellent written communication and strong interpersonal skills
  • Programme and project management experience
