Update on Godstone road collapse

Support available and safety measures in place

Update 2 May

Most residents impacted by the collapse in Godstone High Street on 17 February 2025, have now returned to their homes.

Highways Officers are continuing to carry out investigations into the cause of the collapse and planning how to fix the area.

Detailed investigations continue at the road collapse in Godstone High Street, Surrey, which occurred on 17 February 2025. This remains a complex recovery process, but Highways Officers are working hard to do all they can to return the area to normal as soon as possible.

Continued investigations

Detailed, ongoing investigations are focusing on various areas of the highway. This includes reviewing testing results and conducting geological surveys and interpretations.

Reconnecting utilities

Efforts are underway to reconnect essential utilities such as gas, water, electricity, and telecoms. Temporary connections were established to ensure residents and businesses could continue to receive essential services. However, the main pipes and other infrastructure within the affected area need to be rebuilt or reconnected. This process is complex and would usually take several months for a single utility company to plan, schedule, and complete. In the case of Godstone, multiple programmes of works are required to restore utilities before the road can be fully repaired. The activities of different companies need to be carefully scheduled, and individual utility companies will also need to source the required equipment and machinery to carry out their works.

Designing the repair plan

Once investigations and surveys are completed, a clear plan for repair works, including the sequencing for utility reconnections, will be designed. The site will need to be cleared in preparation for this. Highways Officers will work with utility companies to temporarily disconnect services and carry out additional excavations to allow for the repair works.

Repairing the area

The area affected by the road collapse, including the structure of the road, will be fully reconstructed. Pavements will also be repaired, and the road will be completely rebuilt. The team will continue to work with utility companies to ensure permanent reconnections of services. Once all repairs are completed, the site will be cleared to return the area to normal.

Roads and travel

Road closures and diversions are in place. We encourage residents to avoid the area if possible.

The A25 in Godstone is closed in both directions. Drivers should follow the diversion route via A25 Oxted Road, A22 Godstone Bypass, and Eastbourne Road. To reduce confusion for motorists, this diversion route has been clearly marked. For more details on the diversion, please visit our roadworks map.
