The impact of recent wildfires and how to prevent them
In June alone, crews responded to around 120 outdoor fires in Surrey. That’s almost a 200% increase to the same period last year. This included a wildfire at Valley Wood Place, near Chobham Common. The fire, confirmed as deliberate, affected one hectare of land – that’s about the size of two football pitches.
Firefighters also tackled a wildfire on Hankley Common this July, which impacted four hectares of land – about eight football pitches.
A glass bottle was found near the origin of the fire.
If left outdoors, glass bottles can easily ignite fires in the sun.
Crews worked hard over a few days to tackle the Hankley Common wildfire. On day one, multiple hose reels were used to stop the spread. Then, a tactical plan was developed to continue managing the incident.
At the height of the response, there were 16 fire and rescue vehicles in attendance, which included...
- Three fire enginesTwo water carriers
- Nine off road vehicles
- Two unimogs (specialist wildfire vehicles)
Station Commander, Matt Richardson, the wildfire Subject Matter Expert, shares more about the fire and the sheer volume of damage caused.
Wildfire risks this summer
Warmer weather means a higher wildfire risk. Outdoor fires are also easy to start and spread quickly. Some are a result of BBQs not being extinguished properly, litter left on commons or heaths, or bonfires burning garden waste. Sadly, many are started deliberately.
Spark a conversation
Parents or carers, please have a conversation with your young adults this summer.
- Ask them not to have BBQs out on dry land and to pack a picnic instead.
- Encourage them to put rubbish in the bin or take it home too.
- Explain the devastation fire setting can cause and the risk to homes and lives.
It's a five-minute chat, that could save wildlife habitats, our beautiful outdoors, and prevent 999 from needing to be dialled.
Keep Surrey prepared to win a prize
To celebrate summer the safe way, the fire and rescue service are launching a picnic competition this August. One lucky winner will receive a luxury picnic hamper – perfect for a day out in the countryside.
Keep an eye out for the competition post on their social media channels for details on how to enter.
Here’s more advice to help you and your family have a safe summer:
- Avoid burning garden waste or starting bonfires.
- Dispose of cigarettes properly. Throwing cigarette ends on the ground or out of a car window can start a wildfire.
- If you spot a fire out in the open, don’t attempt to tackle it yourself, leave the area and please call 999.
